Widely Used Kiosks Compromised by Hardcoded Credentials
Hardcoded Credentials in Kiosk Software Allowed Remote Attackers to Compromise API
Uniguest provides kiosks to the hospitality, senior living, specialty retail, education and corporate sectors. The kiosks typically run a locked down version of Windows, and are managed by Uniguest rather than, for example, the hotel customers. With so many kiosks in so many different locations, that management inevitably involves the cloud -- and when the cloud is involved there are often security lapses.
Sea Turtle's DNS Hijacking Continues Despite Exposure
In April 2019, Cisco Talos researchers reported on an ongoing state-sponsored DNS hijacking campaign that had compromised at least 40 different organizations in 13 countries. They named the campaign Sea Turtle, and described the group as brazen and persistent. If discovered, they do not simply give up and go away.
The warning was prescient. After the initial Talos report, the actors appear to have regrouped with new infrastructure. In particular, the researchers have detected a new DNS hijacking technique they believe to be connected to the Sea Turtle threat actors. "While many actors will slow down once they are discovered, this group appears to be unusually brazen, and will be unlikely to be deterred going forward."
U.S. Struck Iranian Military Computers This Week: AP Sources
U.S. military cyber forces launched a strike against Iranian military computer systems on Thursday as President Donald Trump backed away from plans for a more conventional military strike in response to Iran's downing of a U.S. surveillance drone, U.S. officials said Saturday.
Two officials told The Associated Press that the strikes were conducted with approval from Trump. A third official confirmed the broad outlines of the strike. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the operation.
Phishing Campaign Impersonates DHS Alerts
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued an alert on a phishing campaign using attachments that impersonate the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In an effort to make their attack successful, the phishers spoofed the sender email address to appear as a National Cyber Awareness System (NCAS) alert.
